Intrathecal Drug Delivery

Ongoing educational programs for clinicians who treat chronic pain.

Training Opportunities

Title Description
Theory and Technique Workshop

This introductory workshop is intended for clinicians who plan on implementing or expanding their use of implantable pain interventions within 6 months following the course. The workshop addresses the theory and technique of implantable neurostimulation and intrathecal drug delivery systems for chronic pain, and includes a hands-on skills lab.

Trial and Management Workshops

These workshops are designed for clinicians who plan to include or expand their management of chronic pain patients. The course provides discussion on patient selection, screening and post-operative management, hands-on trialing techniques, and more.

Challenging Cases

These case study-based roundtable sessions are designed for established clinicians who want to enhance their skills in treating difficult cases. With the help of a clinician monitor, sessions involve discussions on current issues and challenges related to managing chronic pain patients.

Complex Pain Workshops

These workshops are developed for clinicians who have already mastered Medtronic Pain Therapies basics but want to learn how to manage complex chronic pain cases. The workshop focuses on implant strategies and post-op patient management. It includes case study discussions and the hands-on skills lab.

On-site Peer-to-Peer Education

These one-on-one discussion and observation courses take place at the clinic of an experienced interventional pain practitioner. Your visit will include discussion of patient management and observation of trial or implant techniques.

Mid-level Provider Courses

These courses address strategies for patient management and maximizing a mid-level provider role through lectures, case discussions, and a hands-on lab.

Patient Management Coordinator Programs

Require either introductory or advanced patient management skills.

Title Description
Pain Fellows Courses

These programs introduce Pain Fellows to implantable technologies during the early stages of their Pain Fellowship training. The course includes a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice of chronic pain management with a focus on Medtronic Pain Therapies. Laboratory sessions include hands-on training for neurostimulation and drug delivery systems. Candidates are selected for participation by their Fellowship Director.

Introductory Workshops

Introductory workshops are designed for physicians in an established pain management practice who plan to expand their use of implantable interventions within the next 6 months. The courses address theory and technique in the use of implantable neurostimulation and drug delivery systems for chronic pain management. They include both classroom instruction and hands-on laboratory sessions.

Intermediate Courses for Established Practitioners

Intermediate courses are designed for physicians and nurses who have mastered the basics of Medtronic Pain Therapies and want to enhance their knowledge and skills in preparation for more difficult-to-manage cases. The program includes lectures, small group discussions and hands-on experience in the laboratory with both neurostimulation and drug delivery systems.

Participants are encouraged to bring case studies for discussion with colleagues and faculty. This course is most appropriate for:

  • Physicians who have an established pain management practice and who have implanted at least 7 neurostimulation or drug delivery systems for chronic pain
  • Nurses who work in an established practice and are directly responsible for patient care, pre- and post-implant

Peer-to-Peer Onsite Education

Peer-to-Peer Onsite Education
This program lets physicians spend 1 day learning and observing in the clinic of an experienced pain practitioner. The program includes observation of implantable neurostimulation and drug delivery systems. The course is ideal for practicing physicians who have attended the Theory and Technique Course or have completed at least 3 trials or implants.

Spine Surgeon Course

This course will introduce or expand the spine surgeon's knowledge of methods for evaluating and managing chronic pain patients. It includes discussions on intervention options, including interventional pain modalities of neurostimulation and intrathecal drug delivery. In addition to didactic sessions, the agenda includes hands-on lab training and in-depth case discussions.

Advanced Education for Experienced Clinicians

Advanced education conferences are designed for interventional pain management practitioners who:

  • Have extensive experience using spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery systems
  • Are ready to integrate advanced approaches into their practice

Participants learn and discuss new ideas and procedures for advanced pain management with experts. Sessions follow a roundtable format with moderator-led peer discussions and case studies presented by participants. Attendees also take part in laboratory demonstrations where they can apply new surgical techniques.

Specialized Courses for Therapy Leaders

These forums let physicians with extensive implantable pain intervention experience to discuss current issues and challenges in the field of chronic + management with their peers.

These forums are ideal for physicians who:

  • Already have several years of experience with implantable devices
  • Treat large numbers of chronic pain patients annually
Mid-Level Practitioner Courses

These courses introduce or expand practitioner knowledge about interventional pain interventions, including selection and management of chronic pain patients. Courses include hands-on equipment labs and peer discussions on the mid-level practitioner's scope of responsibilities within a practice.

Patient Management Coordinator Symposium

This course is ideal for nurses and other healthcare professionals who manage chronic pain patients with Medtronic neurostimulation and drug delivery systems. The modular format lets the instructor customize the course to the participants' needs and experience. Select modules are approved for continuing education credits for nurses.

Course content includes:

  • Overview of chronic pain
  • Role of implantable interventions in chronic pain management
  • Patient selection for Medtronic Pain Therapies
  • Programming neurostimulation and drug delivery systems
  • Troubleshooting neurostimulation and drug delivery systems
  • Preventing and managing complications
  • Patient education for Medtronic Pain Therapies
